Why you absolutely need to wear a chest protector while riding:
Recently I observed a trail rider say the following…
“I just really don't see the need and never really have. However, I am quite
a bit older than I was since I last rode and I don’t really want to get hurt,
but really $100 for a plastic protector, is it worth it?”
It sure is! Why? Because a chest protector is all about protecting
your chest, back, shoulders, and even clavical (collar bone) from flying
rocks and dirt, and from injury during a fall. Here are a few comments about
whether or not a chest protector is needed from a few other motorcycle
enthusiasts..
“Crashing your brains out with a chest protector on
is infinitely more comfortable than without.”
“When I was riding without my chest protector I got a fist sized rock roosted
into my chest, almost knocked me off the bike!! It wasn't a pretty sight,
and I was in pain for at least a few days.”
“Also nice to have on when you land on your collar bone. I feel certain I
have avoided definite bone breakage due to wearing mine.”
“The first time you take a handlebar or tree branch in the ribs, you will be
wishing you'd spent $100 on a chest protector. Plus, every time you cough or
sneeze with those broken ribs, you'll be kicking yourself even more.”
"Crashing into pine tree branches with a chest protector on is infinitely more
comfortable than without, unless you like impersonating a shish-ka-bob.”
Needless to say... I won't ride without a chest protector anymore! Neither
should you…
Types of chest protectors:
Chest
protectors are designed to shield you from injury when you crash and from
“roost” (flying rocks). As you can imagine, you could get seriously injured if
you fell off your bike at speed, fit a tree, or got hit by a flying rock. So,
make sure you purchase a chest protector or body armor that covers your whole
upper-body area.
Today, most models available are designed to protect your chest, back,
shoulders, and clavical (collar bone) with protective materials such as
high-impact plastic and/or nylon. There are two types available…
Plastic Chest Protectors / Deflectors
This type of chest protector is designed to be worn over your jersey or
enduro jacket and consist of an injection molded durable polycarbonate
chassis and shoulders. They include a back protection system, and upper arm
guards. These models include integrated venting, and quick lock buckle closure
systems to keep you cool and to make it easy to take on and off. For maximum
protection during fast riding or racing, a plastic chest protector is usually
the best choice.
Protective Body Armor
This
type of chest protector is designed to be worn under your jersey or enduro
jacket and fits snug to your body. These are a nice option that don’t
restrict your movement and offer vented mesh material to flow a lot of air to
keep you cool.
These are a little more expensive than the plastic chest protectors, but
usually include other features like upper arm and elbow protection and built in
kidney belts. Plus, they’re less bulky and you don’t have to ride around looking
like a plastic transformer toy!

Tips for Finding the Right Fit:
Getting the right fit for your chest protector and body armor are easy.
Generally, you purchase the same size that you wear when you purchase a t-shirt.
Be aware that many riders like to purchase their chest protectors one size
larger to fit over their enduro jackets. You may not want to do this, but it’s
worth knowing.
