How to select dirt bike, dual sport and motocross pants:
The best way to select your motocross or dirt bike pants is by knowing what
type of riding you’re going to use them for. Here are the four types of
pants and what brands I recommend…
Motocross Pants
This type of pant is designed to offer you protection while you’re racing
and provide comfort and ease of movement. Most are constructed of
nylon and polyester, with vents for air cooling, and pads for protection during
a crash. The most popular brands are Answer, Fox, Moose, MSR, No Fear, Shift,
Thor, and Troy Lee Designs. Prices range from about $60 to $150.
Dual Sport & Over The Boot Pants
This type of pant is a great choice for your dual sport rides when you’re
combining both street and dirt. These pants offer a more “casual” design
with features like cargo pockets, zip off legs, durable materials, and even
waterproofing.
One version has an “over the boot” style for keeping water, mud, and sand
out of your boots. If you plan to ride your dual sport into town or on the
highways, you may want to buy “low key” colors like blue, black, tan, or grey
so you don’t look like a "Transformer Robot" or a skallywag motocrosser who’s riding illegally on the road! Prices
range from about $80 to $200 and I recommend the following dual sport
pants…
* FirstGear
* KLIM
* Moose Monarch Pass or Expedition
* Shift Recon or Squadron
* Thor Ride or Static
Hot Weather Motocross Pants
Hot weather pants are designed to keep you cool during hot summer days
and are vented for maximum air flow. Moose makes the “Sahara” pant
which offers lots of ventilation, cool styling, and good durability. Prices
range from about $70 to $150.
Cold Weather & Winter Motorcycle Pants
These pants are designed to do two things for you… keep you dry and warm
during your cold and/or wet weather motorcycle expeditions. Like the dual sport
pants, they’re extra roomy so you get total freedom of movement, and they
usually come with an over the boot design for keeping water and mud from running
into your boots. Prices range from about $100 to $220 and I recommend the
following cold weather pants…
Moose Monarch Pass or Expedition
Padded Riding Shorts
Padded riding shorts are a must have item for wearing instead of underwear. They
are very effective at keeping your bum from hurting and "the boys" from slapping
against the seat.

Moose, SixSixOne and Toolshed Riding shorts are great brands. I've tried many, but like the SixSixOne "Bomber" shorts because they're comfortable, vented and padded.
Useful Pants Tips:
Taping the edge of your boots to your pant legs is a classic (old) way to
stay dry on a wet or muddy ride. Sealsavers has a new "BootSaver"
product that looks better and performs the same function as taping your
boots.
Cold Weather Layering: Usually cotton is good to wear, and polyester is
bad. But, during your winter riding excursions, it's the other way around because when cotton get wet it's freezing cold! Here
is the best way to layer your clothes for winter cold weather riding…
Layer 1: Wear a thin polyester sweat-wicking long-sleeve / long legged
layer of clothing. This layer is not for keeping you warm, but for transporting
humidity (sweat) away from your body to the outer layer where it evaporates
away. This is also a great way to avoid chafing from all your pads. You can pick
these types of clothes in the skiing section of your local sports store.
Layer 2: Next layer to add is your knee pads, hip pads, and elbow guards.
Layer 3: The last layer consists of clothing wind breaking material in the front
and vents to the rear. If you’re riding tight trails, you will be producing
plenty of heat to keep you warm as long as you don't stop for more than a minute
or two at a time.
A great combination of cold weather clothing are the Moose Monarch Pass
or Moose Expedition gear with MSR Cold Pro gloves, Moose fleece socks, and
Polypropylene long under wear top and bottom. If you’re riding fast, wear the
optional balaclava!
To prevent dreaded "monkey butt" during a long ride, sprinkle some baby
powder in your riding shorts. It keeps your leg hair from chafing and your bum
from hurting on those epic dual sport and trail rides.
To keep your dual sport or “over the boots” style pants from melting on
your exhaust pipe, make sure you have a pipe guard.
If you stick with good brands like Fox, Moose, or Thor you can’t really
go wrong. They’re affordable, look great, and are durable.
