Motorcycle GPS Mounts
So, you have a new motorcycle GPS unit, but how do you carry it with you and use it as your “electronic map”? You need to find a safe place to mount it on the bike without having to worry about it being destroyed in the event of a crash. You can accomplish this by simply putting it in a pocket, but the best way is to use a motorcycle GPS is to install a mount on your handlebars. Here are your 3 options listed from good, better, to best…Garmin Bicycle Mount - OK:
This is an inexpensive option that works.
This option will cost anywhere from $6 – 30 depending on which GPS unit you
purchase. The Garmin bicycle mount does not have vibration dampening
capabilities, which is not healthy for your motorcycle GPS unit.
RAM Mount - Highly Recommended:
The RAM mount is what I use. The RAM mount consists
of a 1 inch rubber vibration dampening ball that easily mounts to your
handlebars. A double-sided clamp fastens to the rubber ball and the plastic
cradle that holds your motorcycle GPS unit. This option costs about $40, and you
can buy extra “balls” for about $10 each. This will enable you to mount on your
GPS on your other vehicles such as your car or truck dash board, other
motorcycles, even your mountain bike!
TouraTech - Highly Recommended - Expensive:
The TouraTech mount is the ultimate motorcycle GPS
mount. This option will cost you about $100, but offers the best vibration
dampening, looks like a work of metallurgical art, and securely holds your
motorcycle GPS unit. This is the mount that is used in enduro races and the
Paris to Dakar rally!
